Cheap Baby Furniture – Is It Safe?
There is so much bad press coming out of China about poorly manufactured goods nowadays it does make you, as a concerned parent and consumer, very cautious. There have been reports of deaths caused by the paint on baby furnitures being lead based and poisoning the baby when it, like all babies, mouths and licks the materials.
Buying online or in a bricks and mortar store offers little difference to guarantees of quality as both outlets offer the same lines and the same product guarantees if you buy from a reputable outlet. So how do you know which product you can trust? Is price alone a factor that will indicate quality and safety for your baby?
The short answer is usually Yes. Lower cost items cost less for several reasons. One of these is the brand name. It cost money to create and develop a brand and market it. A brand means that the customer can expect the same quality and value from every item offered under that brand. This is often the result of better raw materials, better manufacturing procedures, more stringent quality control and better design in the first place as well as lengthy product testing.
Cheap goods are very often merely clones of proven products but made using poorer quality raw materials and less skilled and supervised workforces paid less than the industry norm. There is no marketing budget to be covered as the products are sold on price alone and so they flood the market. Sometimes the retailer marks up these cheaper items to give the impression of better quality but the shabby standard of the product is often easy to spot. Not so hidden dangers such as the aforementioned lead based paint.
A recent outrage in the UK concerned leather sofas made in China using chemicals to treat the hides that caused severe burns and rashes. Many of the retailers have gone out of business and there is no compensation available for the victims. The common denominator was that the sofas were very cheap for leather units. The reason was cheap hides were used and toxic chemicals introduced to try and improve the durability of the hides but it back fired and many people suffered, including babies and small children.
The safest course of action is to always buy the best you can afford from reputable outlets either online or on the main street. Make sure the company has a fair refund policy and will accept returns of sub standard items. If you stick to the better known brands you will be fine. It really isn’t a question of not being able to afford good quality furnitures for your baby but more a case of you can’t afford to risk buying rubbish. If money really is that tight, buy top name second hand furniture or go without.
